Analysis of an algorithm for generating locally optimal meshes for L2 approximation by discontinuous piecewise polynomials

چکیده
This paper discusses the problem of constructing a locally optimal mesh for the best L2 approximation of a given function by discontinuous piecewise polynomials. In the one-dimensional case, it is shown that, under certain assumptions on the approximated function, Baines’ algorithm [M. J. Baines, Math. Comp., 62 (1994), pp. 645-669] for piecewise linear or piecewise constant polynomials produces a mesh sequence which converges to an optimal mesh. The rate of convergence is investigated. A two-dimensional modification of this algorithm is proposed in which both the nodes and the connection between the nodes are self-adjusting. Numerical results in one and two dimensions are presented.

Optimal Convergence of the Original DG Method on Special Meshes for Variable Transport Velocity
We prove optimal convergence rates for the approximation provided by the original discontinuous Galerkin method for the transport-reaction problem. This is achieved in any dimension on meshes related in a suitable way to the possibly variable velocity carrying out the transport. Thus, if the method uses polynomials of degree k, the L2-norm of the error is of order k+1. Moreover, we also show th...
متن کاملOptimal Error Estimates of the Semidiscrete Central Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Linear Hyperbolic Equations
We analyze the central discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for time-dependent linear conservation laws. In one dimension, optimal a priori L error estimates of order k+1 are obtained for the semidiscrete scheme when piecewise polynomials of degree at most k (k ≥ 0) are used on overlapping uniform meshes. We then extend the analysis to multidimensions on uniform Cartesian meshes when piecewise te...
متن کاملOptimal Convergence of the Original DG Method for the Transport-Reaction Equation on Special Meshes
We show that the approximation given by the original discontinuous Galerkin method for the transport-reaction equation in d space dimensions is optimal provided the meshes are suitably chosen: the L2-norm of the error is of order k + 1 when the method uses polynomials of degree k. These meshes are not necessarily conforming and do not satisfy any uniformity condition; they are only required to ...
متن کاملLow Order Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Second Order Elliptic Problems
Abstract. We consider DG-methods for 2nd order scalar elliptic problems using piecewise affine approximation in two or three space dimensions. We prove that both the symmetric and the nonsymmetric version of the DG-method are well-posed also without penalization of the interelement solution jumps provided boundary conditions are imposed weakly. Optimal convergence is proved for sufficiently reg...
متن کاملDiscontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Approximation of the Cahn-Hilliard Equation with Convection
The paper is concerned with the construction and convergence analysis of a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Cahn–Hilliard equation with convection. Using discontinuous piecewise polynomials of degree p ≥ 1 and backward Euler discretization in time, we show that the order-parameter c is approximated in the broken L∞(H1) norm with optimal order, O(hp+ τ); the associated chemic...
